Skills Based Assessment

Assess learner competencies and skills through structured, AI-powered evaluation frameworks aligned with project-based learning outcomes.

Replace [SKILL] with your target skill before using any of these prompts.

Before the Project (Diagnostic)

Diagnostic quiz

Find out what students already know or assume about a skill before you start teaching it. Use in the first lesson.

Write a 5-question pre-unit quiz that reveals what students already think [SKILL] means and how they've used it before.

KWL chart

Get students to map what they know, want to learn, and have learned. Use at the start and revisit at the end.

Create a KWL chart template focused on [SKILL] with prompts for each column that students fill in at the start and end of the unit.

Entry ticket

Set students up to practise a skill on purpose. Use before group tasks or collaborative sessions.

Write 3 entry ticket options that prime students to use [SKILL] intentionally before a group task.

During the Project (Formative)

Exit ticket

Quick end-of-lesson reflection. See whether students noticed their own skill use during the session.

Write 4 exit ticket options for students to reflect on how they actually used [SKILL] during today's session.

Observation checklist

A tool for you, not the students. Track who is actually demonstrating the skill during group work.

Create a teacher observation checklist with 5 specific, visible behaviours that indicate [SKILL] in action during group work.

Peer assessment form

Students give each other structured feedback on a specific skill. Best mid-project when there's real evidence.

Write a structured peer assessment form where students give evidence-based feedback on a teammate's use of [SKILL].

Self-assessment

Students reflect on their own skill development across a unit. Best when they have enough experience to be honest.

Write 5 self-reflection prompts that help students honestly evaluate their own [SKILL] development across a unit.

Formative quiz

Mid-unit check. See if students understand the skill well enough to apply it deliberately.

Write a 5-question mid-unit quiz checking whether students understand [SKILL] deeply enough to apply it deliberately.

After the Project (Summative)

Summative test

End-of-unit knowledge test. Covers conceptual understanding through a mix of question types.

Design a 10-question end-of-unit test assessing students’ conceptual knowledge of [SKILL] — include multiple choice, scenario response, and one extended reflection.

4-level rubric

Rubric for assessing skill demonstration across a project. Use for consistent criteria when marking.

Create a rubric with 3 criteria assessing how students demonstrated [SKILL] across a project, rated Beginning / Developing / Proficient / Extending.
